This is the first Falco book that I have read. It took me a while to get into it as it is a curious mixture of ancient Rome with modern day attitude and expressions of language. The story was good and there was a little bit of a twist to the ending. There is already another excellent opinion that covers the story, but in case you haven’t read it I will give you an idea of the story line. The story stands on it’s own, but is in fact the third in the 'Partners' trilogy. In his tenth adventure, set in AD74, Marcus Didius Falco, Roman Informer extraordinaire, has just been made the Procurator of Sacred Poultry (!) When a frightened child approaches our hero, pleading for help, he doesn't belieive that someone wants to kill her, as he is too preoccupired with his new job and his demanding (if gorgeous) girlfirend, Helena Justina. The little girl has been selected as the new Vestal Virgin.
