Advantages: Funny, thrilling,full of twists
Disadvantages: none
In his tenth adventure, set in AD74, Marcus Didius Falco, Roman Informer extraordinaire, has just been made the Procurator of Sacred Poultry (!) When a frightened child approaches our hero, pleading for help, he doesn't belieive that someone wants to kill her, as he is too preoccupired with his new job and his demanding (if gorgeous) girlfirend, Helena Justina. The little girl has been selected as the new Vestal Virgin. When she promptly disappears Falco is asked to investigate, closely watched by Titus Caesar and his ex-partners..they are all waiting for him to slip up. In this particularly terrifying exploit, Falco is lead deeper into some of Rome's ancient cults and their dark and mysterious goings on. A gruesome corpse, resentful relatives, the missing child, cover-ups at the highest level: all form an intriguing mix of thrills and spills. As usual Falco's wry humour and quick wit help us enjoy this adventure even more. This may be his tenth outing but Falco is as energetic and as entertaining as he was in his first book (The Silver Pigs). Lindsey Davis has managed to create a memorable detective of ancient Rome. But in making him a vulnerable but resourceful character, she has managed to endear him to the reader. Highly recommended.
