Advantages: Cheap, Frank, Pocket size
Disadvantages: None really
You know the scenario, you're a young (or young at heart!) businessman in a strange city or you have just moved to a new abode and haven't a clue where the food and drink action is. And so it was I found myself in the fine, newly bustling, city of Leeds. It could just as easily been Manchester, Newcastle or a number of other cities. The problem is of course you haven't a bit of local knowledge - Rough Guides, Lonely Planet and Time Out don't bother with these cities. It was at this point I stumbled upon an Itchy guide to Leeds at the local Virgin Megastore. For £3 I thought I would give it a go. I was hooked. The pocket size Itchy guide must have had weeks worth of investigation - not a week of running around like a headless chicken. The guide is split into a number of sections including restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs and shopping amongst other things. The reviews are frank - one restaurant, amongst other things, was described as 'shit' and 'the worst restaurant in the city'. Of course the reviews with a slight pinch of salt make up your own mind and if nothing else use the guide as a mini yellow pages and map. Each section includes a top 5, worth checking out as your first stops. Also includes is an Itchy card which contains discounts on a number of the establishments listed in the guide - use them and you will soon have your three quid back. Itchy have a total of 17 guides available - check out www.itchycity.co.uk for a full list. Finals proof - I made sure I grabbed my Itchy guide to York for the weekend.
