Advantages: Breadth of information, beautiful illustration

Disadvantages: Lack of a detailed map, price

I used the Everyman Guide for Istanbul, and was very impressed. It has details of the sights (covering just about everything I visited), with lots of well-illustrated, well-written text. These are arranged by area. Inside each cover are maps, although they are not detailed enough to rely on as your only map of the city. The back section includes details of hotels, restaurants, useful addresses, etc.

So far, so fairly standard. However, the Everyman Guide also has beautifully illustrated sections on nature, history, arts, crafts and tradtiions, architecture etc. Inset into area guides are sections on specific arts, Istanbul as seen by writers/artists, and the architect Sinan. The "Practical Information" section includes an itinerary based on the writings of French author Pierre Loti. These tranform a good guide into an exceptional one, which gives insight into more than just which sights to visit.
