My youngest daughter will be starting school in January and I have just noticed recently that she really seems to be taking off with her phonics. We play games where I sound out a common CVC (consonant - vowel - consonant) word such as dog or cat and she tells me the word. Alternately I say a word and she tells me the sounds she can hear. Oxford Reading Tree is a collection of books aimed specifically at young children learning to read. All the books are simple to read and use short words with lots of repetion. They contain lovely pictures that can be used to help tell the story and parent's notes to help you help your child with reading.
