When my daughter first started school aged 4 years old I had big expectations of her, as I'm sure most parent's do. I was expecting her to learn to read and write no problem. Unfortunately this was not the case. Whilst she excelled at number work she just could not make sense of words. By the end of Reception year she was only reading her name and was getting further and further behind in class.
