Advantages: Gives lots of advice on techniques and step by step instructions

Disadvantages: little on the expensive side

If ever you have wanted to have a go with pastels then this is a good book to start with. 125 pages of techniques that help you learn to use pastels.

The book starts by talking about the various types of pastels and the effects they give. It also advises on a set to begin with. It talks about which ones mix with each other

The book then goes on to talk about the different papers to use and the effects the pastels have on the papers. Depending on your subject, with this knowledge you can select the right pastels and paper for the desired effect.

The book then goes on to talk about choosing different subjects and how to get the best effects from that subject. My favourite part of the book is the step by step exercises the book gives you. From trees to portraits of children, it talks through the steps to help you achieve a beautiful picture created by yourself.

All in all a good book if you are starting out with pastels. I do however think it is a little on the expensive side for 125 pages.
