Advantages: Great plot, Good character development, Good chapter seperation

Disadvantages: hard to put down (so a sort of advantage too I guess!)

I’ll be honest with you (first time for everything eh!) I’m not that much of a reader, I tend to watch the film adaptation of many novels rather than reading the original source material, examples of this would have to be other Grisham releases such as ‘The Firm’, ‘The Pelican Brief’, ‘The Rainmaker’ and ‘The Client’. Many people (myself included strangely enough) would argue that a book is often far superior to any film counterpart – a quick example would be ‘Sphere’ by Michael Crichton – terrific book, terrible film, but that’s a different Op altogether.

Knowing that I enjoy works by John Grisham, my mum recently bought me a copy of ‘The Partner’ when she spied it on special offer in a local bookstore, and I’m more than happy to report that it really is a riveting read. Set in modern-day Brazil and the US, The Partner tells the story of a middle-aged lawyer who fakes his own death in an attempt to get away with stealing over $90 million from the crooked law firm he works for, not content with that he also tries to be with the woman he has loved long after his interest in his cheating wife started to wane.

Not before too long his employers set about tracking him down once they discover the missing millions, but rather than going to police (they can’t, because they’re up to no good too) they employ a bunch of thugs and private investigators to track him down too. Faced with nowhere to turn, he ends up contacting an old acquaintance as he struggles to fight off the charges of fraud and possible imprisonment he is up against.

Fast paced and well written, the plot works well with interesting character development and a real sense of urgency about our (anti?) heroes’ situation as he is faced with double-crossers throughout his desperate attempt to win not only his money, but also the woman he loves (how lame does TH
AT bit sound, sorry!).

The novel is broken up into easy to read chapters that prove it to be a real page-turner, if you’re familiar with previous works by Grisham, either in novel or film form then I’d highly recommend you get yourself a copy of this to see for yourself why many are calling this his best work yet! As someone who isn’t all that big on reading books, you can’t get a much better recommendation than that!

This is one of my favourite books ever. I hope that the film version is released but I am not sure it would work.
