Advantages: Teaches linguistic patterns that work

Disadvantages: Dictionary style format, a little confusing at times

Milton H. Erickson, MD was one of the worlds most well respected, influential and extremely talented hypnotherapists of all time. His outstanding ability to be able to put people into trance and cure their problems using conversational or covert hypnosis and communication skills is primarily admired by hypnotists, psychologists and NLP practitioners all around the world.

Erickson himself claims that he wasn't really consciously aware of the way that he performed his techniques and that the way he performed on his subjects was that he was subconsciously skilled and somewhat of a master of linguistics.

In the development of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), a form of applied psychology, both Richard Bandler and John Grinder studied Erickson, modelling his techniques in order to work out how he operated and how he was so effective in his approach.

John Grinder then went on to release this book, Patterns Of The Hypnotic Techniques Of Milton H. Erickson, MD Volume 1. The book is based upon the clever language patterns than Erickson often used, now known as psycho-linguistics.

Though the book can be a little difficult to understand in terms of what happens when you use these language patterns, it provides a dictionary style format of linguistic techniques and explains how these patterns affect the subject in terms of generalizations, deletions and distortions.

Before reading this book I would recommend that you do you some research and look into the linguistic side of hypnosis first, as this will better help you understand how language and the brain program each other.

Summary: An essential book for anyone with a great interest and knowledge of hypnosis
