Peace at Last by Jill Murphy

Peace at Last is a children’s fiction book about a family of three bears, Mr Bear, Mrs Bear and Baby Bear. One evening they are all tired and so they go off to bed.
Mrs Bear falls asleep quickly but Mr Bear cannot get to sleep, as Mrs Bear begins to snore…….SNORE, said Mrs Bear, SNORE, SNORE, SNORE…..Oh no said Mr Bear I can’t stand THIS, so he got up and went into Baby Bear’s bed.
But Baby Bear is not asleep either….he is lying in bed pretending to be an aeroplane……NYAAOW!!! Went Baby Bear, NYAAOW, NYAAOW, NYAAOW….Oh no said Mr Bear I can’t stand THIS, so he got up and went to sleep in the living room.
…….TICK-TOCK went the living room clock, TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK!
And so the story goes until at last Mr Bear finally gets to sleep……but where does he sleep? And is it the sleep he wished for?
I first read this book to my own children who loved it and very soon picked up the repetition of the story, because my little monsters loved this book so much I decided to take it into the primary school that I work in to see if the children there would like it as much….and I’m glad to say they did!
They got engrossed in Mr Bears plight to find a decent night’s sleep and laughed out loud every time he got disturbed…..
A story book like this is all about putting the expression into your voice though, make snoring noises when Mrs Bear is snoring, make the aeroplane noises, the children will join in and be aeroplanes with you!
This is a beautifully illustrated book too with wonderful black and white drawings and full colour pictures, the children will love to tell the story before they can even read!
This book was commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal, and the author has won many prizes for her children’s books and illustrations.
