Advantages: Great read

Disadvantages: None

The first Jill Murphy book I read was called "Five Minutes Peace". It was such a good read and my children loved it.

I was recently in my local library with the children and told them they could pick a couple of books each. Luke charged off in search for the biggest book he could find, and Charlotte just sat down with her thumb in her mouth waiting for me to find her a suitable book to look at.

It was not too long before I came across this book, it was a hard backed version so was ideal for Charlotte as there would be no chance of her accidently ripping any of the pages.

The book follows Mr Bear through the night. All the bears were tired so they headed off to bed. Mrs Bear fell straight asleep but unfortunately Mr Bear didn't and found it even harder to do so when Mrs Bear started snoring loudly SNORE SNORE SNORE. This bit made me giggle what a pleasant change having the woman snore in bed for once.

His favourite saying throughout the book was "I can't stand this". So he got up and headed for Baby Bears room. Baby Bear was not asleep either and was lying in bed pretending to be an aeroplane. After some time of this noise he said wait for it "I can't stand this" and went to sleep in the living room. TICK TOCK went the living room clock followed by a CUCKOO CUCKOO and by now you must know what he said. So off he went to the kitchen. Not much joy their either as he heard the DRIP DRIP from a leaky tap and a HMMMMMMMMM from the fridge. With all that noise going on he headed off into the garden.

Obviously the garden ended up being as noisy as the house with the owls making their TOO-WHIT-TOO-WHOO noises followed by the SNUFFLE SNUFFLE of the hedgehog and not forgetting the noisey old cats MIAAAOWING. So the poor old bear staggers off to the car in hope for some peace and quiet.

By the time he is in the car its nearly morning and the birds are starting to
sing and the sun comes up. Poor old Mr Bear looks shattered at this point and completely fed up and decides to head back into the house.

Back in the bedroom Mrs Bear has stopped snoring so he gets back into bed for a well earned sleep. BRRRRRRRRRR goes the alarm clock.

Well I love this story it reminds me of my house, although when I cannot sleep you would not find me going out into the garden or the car.

I have read this story to Luke a few times now and he is beginning to remember the story and is now starting to read it to me by just looking at the pictures and adding in Mr Bears familiar catchphrase. The pictures in the book are really colourful and the bears look cute.

So to finish off another great book by the famous Jill Murphy whom I must say looks remarkably like the Jill Murphy from Dooyoo, and a must read for all the young children out there.

I love this book. My daughter (nearly 2) likes me to read it over and over again and I now know the story off by heart. If she gets fed up in the car, I just tell her this story - she joins in on the 'Oh no, I can't stand this' bit. A great op and a great book. Must look out for some other Jilly Murphy books. Jo

I used to love this book, and heard it being read on one of the childrens programmes that Thomas watches recently, until then I'd forgotten about it, I intend to buy it though, he loved it too :-)
