The Peak District is a region with a split personality. The limestone 'White Peak' area occupies the centre and south. This is a beautiful, soft landscape, with crystal clear rivers cutting through lushly vegetated limestone dales which are covered in wildflowers in spring and summer. In contrast to the White Peak, the 'Dark Peak', enclosing the White Peak like an upturned horseshoe, is a much bleaker landscape. This region is comprised of coarse millstone grit which rises to the highest points in the Peak District at the peat-clad moorlands of Bleaklow, Black Hill, and Kinder Scout.
