Advantages: Bright Colours, Flaps, Rhymes

Disadvantages: The flaps could be made stronger

This is one of my 18 month old son’s favourite books, it was given to him as a present when he was 5 months old and I have been reading it with him since.

****Description****

This is a board book published by Ladybird and illustrated by Kate Merritt that contains flaps for the little one to open as you go through the book. The book measures 21cm x 21cm and has a total of 10 pages.

The front cover has the Ladybird logo at the top with a red strip and yellow dots. There is a bright bold picture of a young child reading this book.

****Story****

This is not a storybook as such, as you turn to each double page there is a peekaboo rhyme on one side and a picture with a flap on the other side.

The first two pages take you to a little girl hiding - the words read – Hello! Who is hiding behind her teddy? One, two, three – are you ready? Peekaboo! The picture has a big teddy that when you pull it down there is a little girl hiding behind it.

The next two pages take you to a big bright red balloon (I won’t write all the words that are on each page) again you will read a rhyme and then shout with your little one – Peekaboo! Pull down the balloon and you will find a little boy hiding.

Now on the next pages there is a girl hiding behind lovely curly hair so big that it takes two flaps to find out who is underneath – Peekaboo! (These flaps are quite difficult for younger children to open as they do open at an angle)

What’s on the next pages…it’s a girl with a very stylish hat, well fancy that! Peekaboo!

Now we are at the last and my son’s favourite page because when you lift the flap you will see a face you have seen before – it’s a mirror. For some reason Louis could spend ages staring at himself in the mirror!

****Price****

This book is averagely priced for a board book at £4.99 (personally I feel that children’s books should be a lot cheaper). It is available to buy direct from Ladybird at www.ladybird.co.uk and also from www.amazon.co.uk from as little as £2.69. I have also seen it in Waterstones and most of the Ladybird books are available in the library.

****Best Bits****

This book is very eye catching with bright and bold colours. It covers a large age range from about 6 months to about age 3. The book does actually say up to age 2 but I would say that a child slightly older than this would still be interested.

The board pages on my copy have not bent or been at all damaged despite being put to the test.

The flaps are great for co-ordination and keep little ones far more interested in the book.

I feel that children should be encouraged to look at books from babies so any book that kids like is great.

****Negative points****

The only negative point that I have with this book is that the flaps are not very strong and could easily be ripped. As they are made of quite a thin card it is also hard for younger children to get a grip on them to lift them up.

I fully agree, kids books *should* be much cheaper than they are! This one sounds a great start for getting little ones into reading.
