Advantages: Lovely story, bold pictures, great for Peppa fans

Disadvantages: Not much text so not for older children

Harry loves nothing more than a good story at bedtime (and through out the day as well actually!) so at Christmas time, his family were very kind to him and he got a lot of lovely new books for us to share together. We had a few Noddy books, a few annuals for 2009 and of course some Peppa Pig books too! We have a little pile of the newer books by his bed so every night when we've brushed his teeth, he gets to choose one from the pile and a firm favourite is this one 'Sports Day'. I've read it goodness knows how many times but both he and I really enjoy it is as a bedtime story.

Peppa Pig has risen massively in popularity over the past couple of years, and I bet you can't find one parent of a toddler out there who doesn't know who Peppa Pig is! The show is broadcast on Five's Milkshake and Nick Junior, and has many toys, books, DVDs and other related merchandise out there for toddlers to love and enjoy. There is a large selection of books available in the Peppa Pig range, all of which I believe are published by Ladybird and are wonderful quality books full of gorgeous pictures and sweet stories as well.

This book is called Sports Day, and is the book version of a series 2 episode of the same name. This is actually one episode I haven't yet seen so I can't comment on how similar it is to the episode, but judging by the other books based on episodes we've got, it is very similar although there are minor differences between the two, although Harry hasn't noticed any! The cover has a lovely bold picture of the main characters of Peppa Pig, moreso than any of the other books we have actually, and its deep yellow colour makes it stand out on the bookshelf.

These books are probably designed to be read by parents to their children because the text is relatively small on the page even though there isn't much of it, but I wouldn't expect an early or new reader to be able to read such small text easily. The double paged spreads feature gorgeous colour pictures of whatever the words on the page are describing and are very attractive for its younger viewers. As I mentioned, there is not a lot of text on each page so it opens up plenty of opportunity for parents to talk to their children about whats on the page or expand on what the story has already told them.

I must admit that I really do enjoy reading these books aloud to Harry, and he definitely likes them being read to him as he always asks for his Peppa book. The story in this one is fairly basic, it's sports day at Peppa's school and all of the animal children are competing against each other in events. As well as a story, there is some good morals within the book as well, such as that winning isn't everything, and to be pleased for other's successes as well as your own. This is done subtly in the story but you can't fail to pick it up as you're reading along. Several sports events are featured such as the tug of war, a running race and the long jump, so again more chances for parents to talk about sports and staying healthy etc. whilst reading the book.

The book quality is also very good, with a thin cardboard cover and nice glossy pages throughout. The images are crystal clear and look like they have been taken directly from the TV show itself. All the characters are full of colour and recognisable, and we have lots of fun spotting Harry's favourites throughout the book. This book in particular is a very bright and sunny one because it's set outdoors and it looks much more colourful! The story is long enough to keep a toddler's attention but I sometimes wonder whether Harry would like to be a bit longer because although there are 24 pages, there isn't that much text on any of them. I make it longer by talking about the pages in between and discussing things with Harry. It's a lovely little story, great length for bedtime reading and a definite must for all Peppa fans! It's fun for mummies, daddies and children alike!
