I had not read anything by Imogen Parker before but my Mum bought me a set of her books for Christmas and I have just completed 'Perfect Day'.
Nell and Alexander have been together 7 years. They have never married but have a daughter together, Lucy who they love dearly. Before having Lucy, Nell and Alexander lived in many different countries including Italy and Japan. However, Lucy has a lot of allergies so therefore they moved back to the UK for Lucy's sake, being close to a hospital and close to her parents is important to Nell.
Alexander is really beginning to wonder where his life is going. He remembers before they had Lucy and life seemed so different, not needing to worry about this and that. He does love Lucy a great deal but cant help but crave the life him and Nell used to live.
Fed up of going to work each day at the local school, Alexander decides to treat himself to a day off. He doesn't tell Nell, and he doesn't know what he is going to do with his day but he just wants some time to think. He decides to go for a coffee and meets a woman named Kate, he doesnt spend long with her but after she has left it leaves him wondering about his life and whether Nell and Lucy are what he really wants.
I immediately loved the character of Nell. She seemed very down to earth and it was obvious that she loved both her husband and her daughter a lot. Yes, things weren't as great with Alexander as they used to be but like most relationships, she just believes they are having a rough patch. I didnt like the character of Alexander much, although he seemed like a nice person I just felt very sorry for Nell and Lucy throughout all of the book.
I enjoyed the plot of the book. The majority of the story happens over just one day which means we get to know exactly what is happening throughout. The story is very laid back and I wasn't in a hurry to get on with the book in order to find out what happened until I was about halfway through. The ending is a good one and I was left guessing right up to the last minute about what was going to happen and I really didnt know!
The writing style was laid back and I felt at ease reading the book. I felt as though I really knew all of the main characters and I'm pleased the ending of the book was how it was as I think it was the correct ending.
The book was written by Imogen Parker.
It was published in 2002 by Black Swan.
It has 384 pages.
It is not currently available directly from Amazon but it is available used from Amazon Marketplace from 1p (+ p+p).
==Would I recommend it?==
Yes, initially I didnt think I was going to enjoy the book a great deal but I really began to enjoy it during the second half. The characters were understandable and believable and I liked the laid back writing style. I will certainly be reading more from the author.
