Advantages: A book with a totally new angle, Imaginative, wonderful to read.
Disadvantages: Gets slightly boring in the middle.
You have probably never heard of this book and I was in the same predicament when my father suggested it to me. The cover made me think of nothing but a boring love story but I took my dads advice and gave this book a go. It is set in 18th century France, Paris to be precise, where, much like back in England, there weren’t such a thing as sewers. This book starts by putting you imagination into the foulest environment possible, a fish market built on a graveyard with the bodies still beneath it. Here Suskind starts the beginning of a book, which is so diverse and unorthodox that u have to ask yourself whether it is a joke. After about four chapters however the book suddenly becomes an incredible piece of literature that has the power to make you change your concept on the way people are viewed. The main character Gean Grenoule-Baptise has, by pure luck, the most accurate nose in the world and eerily for those times no personal odour of any variety. He goes through life very inconspicuously having many jobs. His final carrier is however the art of perfume making for Grenoule hasn’t just got the finest sense of smell but can create the finest smells as well. He soon becomes obsessed with the smell of maturing females and so the murders begin. This book is beautiful. It has all that is required of a true classic. It has love, hate, possession, loss and plenty of smells. Murder soon becomes the basis of this book along with the desperate urge to own and posses. There is a lovely use of Metaphor and simaly within this book as Gean Grenoule-Baptise is likened to many secretive things (not wanting to give too much away). The only bad point to this book is the middle part where the book had a bit of a boring phase but this was only because there was such an intense bit before hand. I would advise any body to read this book, as I am a big Sci-fi fan so this is completely different but it is a wonderful read. Please try
this book and if it isn’t to your fancy then there must be something wrong with you.
