Advantages: Sticks to the original's style

Disadvantages: Definite sequel - read the original first

If you didn't know already, Peter Pan In Scarlet was actually commisioned by Great Ormond Street Hospital. The copyright on the original Peter Pan was running out, and as all funding from it went to the sick kiddies, they wanted to ensure that didn't abruptly stop.

Considering the huge classic that Peter Pan is, Geraldine McCaughrean had a tough act to follow, and I approached the book with some caution, expecting some awful ultra-modern version. I'm pleased to say that I didn't get that.

Peter Pan In Scarlet is based around the Lost Boys who left Neverland and grew up. Strange things start happening when they go to sleep - they awake covered in war paint and the like. Clearly something must have gone wrong in Neverland, and they must return to find out what.

What I like most about this book is that Geraldine McCaughrean has stuck very much to the original tone of Peter Pan. She's not given in to the urge to modernise it and I love her for that.

That said, this is very much a sequel. Reading the original before this IS required, as otherwise it will make no sense.

Summary: Well-written sequel that deserves more attention
