I really do love to travel and always get the guide book for a location before I visit so that I can plan my trip and get some idea of the culture and people, given that the current trendy place to visit for backpackers is Phaic Tan a little known Asian country I thought I would get this book by the Jetlag publishing group in preperation for my visit. I could not wait to arrive in the capital city Bumpattabumpah and to then travel on to the seaside resorts of the idyllic Thong On. The guide book is packed with excellent advice, what I especially like is the fact that interspersed throughout the book is travel advice from four travellers who each have a ... Phaic Tan is a fake travel book on the made up East Asia country of Phaic Tan, it is part of a series of spoof travel books and this is a very funny book although after a while some of the jokes sort of get a bit repetitive after all a lot of them are based around funny pronounciations or spellings of places and things which sort of poke fun at the Asian accent or way they structure words. My description is not intended to suggest it is a racist form of humour rather one that relies a bit too heavily on stereotypes. For example in the book one of the top seaside destinations is Thong On so I guess from that you can guess the level of humour used. Set out like ... Read the complete review

The travel guide to Phaic Tan is the second in the Jetlag series and it is just as fascinating and absorbing a read as the first. You can tell from the front cover that the focus of this travel guide is the people of the country of Phaic Tan. It is a country that most people probably have not even heard of, let alone thought about visiting so it really is great to get an insight into a country that is not inundated with British tourists. It is a bit off the beaten track but worth reading about, just to learn about new countries. You are unlikely to find a flight here so it might be disappointing if you fall in love with what you read and then cannot actually visit ... Read the complete review

The second in the Jetlag Travel Guide series, Phaic Tan is a fictitious guide book based on Southeast Asia. If you like humourous travel books, this one will appeal as it describes Phaic Tan (read: Fake Tan) in great detail with some very strange looking photos of the locals. An original concept in travel humour, the layout is like a Lonely Planet guide, containing maps, traveller's tips and sections on accommodation, dining, politics, history, art, religion, shopping and tourist attractions. The accommodation section ranges from five star hotels "where the lawns are manicured - literally - by ground staff armed with small scissors" to budget hostels where the ... Read the complete review
