... ratings other reviewers have given it to be honest. My grandson found this an extremely confusing book. The story didn't really make sense for starters. Pig found a map and went on a dig, and as an adult it was obvious that this was some sort of treasure map. But a child who isn't familiar with lots of pirate stories wouldn't have known this because they weren't told. Pig was following clues that were not really explained by the accompanying text. I think it's really important that early reader books are kept simp...more

Premium Review Phonics Readers: Big Pig on a Dig - Phil Roxbee Cox: A Thorough Disappointment (427 words)
by - written on 17/05/09 (Very useful, 33 readings)
Rating:

Big Pig on a Dig is another book from the Usborne Phonics Readers series for 3-5yr olds. It retails at £4.99 individually but you can get it as part of a box set for a discounted price usually if you prefer. I got the box set including twelve titles from the Usborne Phonics Readers series for £9.99 from the Book People. I'm reviewing all of the titles that we own so please see my other reviews if you're thinking about buying any of the titles from this series. Big Pig on a Dig is probably one of the worst Usborne Phonics Readers I've come across to date. I'm really surprised by all the five star ratings other reviewers have given it to be ...  Read the complete review

This book is another one of the great phonic readers series by Usborne books. Big Pig on a Dig is written by by Phil Roxbee Cox and illustrated by Stephen Cartwright. Within this series there are 12 books. They each retail at £4.99 or you can purchase all 12 books in 2 bound books that retail at £9.99 each. This specific book is about Pig who finds a treasure map. He is very excited about this and asks his friend cat to help him find where to dig. Cat says that he needs to take a nap and so pig goes to hunt for treasure on his own. Pig finds the spot and begins to dig. he digs very deep. What does he find? I'm sure cat knows something, but is keeping it ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Phonics Readers: Big Pig on a Dig - Phil Roxbee Cox: Big pig on a dig in a wig hopping on a twig ! (411 words)

This book came home in my daughters book bag today and we enjoyed it repeatedly until bedtime! We absoloutely adore this set and it was one of two of the set of twelve that we hadn't had the pleasure of yet. Big pig on a dig, written by Phil Roxbee Cox and Stephen Cartwright, is one of the Usbourne Phonics Readers books that use synthetic phonic based text. It is the process of reading by sounding the individual sounds of a word and then blending them together to read the word as a whole. For example this book in particular uses b-i-g p-i-g d-i-g as single letter phonemes which are the sort I am currently concentrating on with my three year old. I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Fun, fascinating way to learn (151 words)

Great fun story to keep your little ones engaged and interested but also teaches them at the same time phonetics. I have the set for my daughter and she is so fascinated by them and really enjoys spending time with mummy learning how to sound words and read the book herself with the help of her mummy. She is so proud of herself when she manages to complete a word or a page. Gives me a reassuring feeling that i can send my daughter to school and be happy in the knowledge she can be top of her class. And gives me a chance to spend time with my daughter helping her to learn and grow. My daughter is not yet 4 and has grasped the idea ready to takje to her 2nd year at school ...  Read the complete review
