Advantages: Fun easy learning with your little ones

Disadvantages: none

This book came home in my daughters book bag today and we enjoyed it repeatedly until bedtime!
We absoloutely adore this set and it was one of two of the set of twelve that we hadn't had the pleasure of yet.

Big pig on a dig, written by Phil Roxbee Cox and Stephen Cartwright, is one of the Usbourne Phonics Readers books that use synthetic phonic based text. It is the process of reading by sounding the individual sounds of a word and then blending them together to read the word as a whole. For example this book in particular uses b-i-g p-i-g d-i-g as single letter phonemes which are the sort I am currently concentrating on with my three year old.
I find that the fact that each book uses many rhyming phonemes makes it easier for my daughter to learn and much more fun for us both. The books also have fold out pages that my daughter enjoys to look for and anticipate what is about to occur. As well as all this, look out for the hidden 'duck' on every page which encourages your little ones to really study the illustrations.

Big pig on a dig is a story about pig receiving a letter which tells him where he can find a treasure map (in a h-a-t of course!) thus b-i-g p-i-g on a d-i-g. He has lots of fun but alas finds no treasure.Thats because f-a-t c-a-t drew the map for fun! Its all easy, silly fun but suprisingly works as my daughter reads quite a few of the words and 'sounds' out the words she is trying to read.

The 12 books in this series are as follows.
Big pig on a dig
Fat cat on a mat
Fox on a box
Frog on a log
Goose on the loose
Hens pens
Mouse moves house
Sam sheep cant sleep
Shark in the park
Ted in a red bed
Teds shed
Toad makes a road

Each book contains 16 pages and are aimed at age 3-5.

They can be bought individually for £4.99 or more temptinglyfor £9.99 currently for the sat at the book people . com.
Or obviously from school or your local library.

These phonics books have been newly reissued to support the governments focus on teaching through synthetic phonics in primary schools.

Summary: this idea works - try it !

My son had this set and is a really good way of encouraging early reading as the words are simple and the stories fun too! x
