Toad makes a road is the story of a cheerful toad and her quest to make a road using her bright yellow dumper truck and an assortment of other large machines which will appeal to vehicle loving boys. The book contains lots of brightly coloured illustrations, rhyming text and opening flaps to add an extra dimension to the tale. Most importantly its fun to read and full of unexpected plot twists which appeal to chldren. Originally published with the header "easy words to read" this has been updated to "phonic readers" in line with the UKs current educational strategies. Toad makes a Road is another book from the Usborne Phonics Readers series for 3-5yr olds. It retails at £4.99 individually but you can get it as part of a box set for a discounted price usually if you prefer. I got the box set including twelve titles from the Usborne Phonics Readers series for £9.99 from the Book People. I'm reviewing all of the titles that we own so please see my other reviews if you're thinking about buying any of the titles from this series. Each of these books is based on synthetic phonics - recognition of distinct sounds that go together to make up words. Sounds sounds are a single letter, others can be combinations of letters e.g. sh, ch, ar. Sounds go together by blending them and making words, e.g. m-ou-se = mouse. This method of reading supports children in learning to read as it can build their confidence at reading new words, breaking the new word down in order to read it. This specific book is about Toad who has a new house on a ... Read the complete review

These are really great for my daughter i have bought the set. In her class at school they have started to look and learn the phonetics so i like to be able to give her a head start. She has picked up on it really well and has really enjoyed the books themselves. She also feels so proud when she has finally completed a page and has Mummy's approval and applause. I would recommend these if you are wanting to give your pre schoolers and young school children a head start. My daughter does not fully start this subject till next year and the class are currently just looking at the work to give them an idea and knowing my daughter can go into school next year with confidence ...
