Advantages: Interesting Shots

Published by Phaidon, and written by Ian Jeffrey, 'The Photography Book' is a large compilation of photographs costing £19.47 from Amazon (RRP £29.95). There is also a smaller paperback version available which retails at £5.56.
Arranged alphabetically, each page houses a high-resolution print from each of the featured photographers. Ranging from Hans Aarsman to James van der Zee, the book really has something for everyone. Under each photographers name is a description of the photo, and an insight into why it was taken or 'set-up' in the way that it was. This information makes interesting reading and allows you into the mind of the artist.
I personally find the book interesting as it has a mix of both studio work and photojournalism. For example, we have photos in the style of Bruce Nauman's highly posed self portrait, as opposed to Larry Burrows shocking depiction of the Vietnam War.
In total there are 500 images, and each one has been chosen as a revolutionary shot, or as an outstanding contribution to the genre of photography. The book also features a glossary of photographic terms - which is very useful, as I wasn't aware of some of the descriptive words which I read in the text above some of the prints.
With Christmas around the corner, this interesting coffee table book will make a good gift for someone if you're stuck for ideas. I also recommend 'The Art Book' by the same publisher, which is similar in its presentation.
The Photography Book is an essential purchase if you are keen on photography, as it gives a great overview of both historical and contemporary exponents of the art. Highly Recommended.
Summary: Excellent Coffee Table Book
