Advantages: better than nothing
Disadvantages: impossible to understand
It must be said that this is not the best book I have read recently. Published by the Oxford University press, this book shows much promise until you actually start to delve deeper that just browsing. On the whole the explanation is pretty poor not to mention almost impossible to follow unless you actually have a degree. In many of the sections the explanation is simply insufficient for such difficult subject matter, and the derivations for the equations obtained are simply incomprehensible. Unlike many, I enjoy Physical chemistry when it is explained properly; however, this book fails to deliver in this area. Complicated issues are dealt with far too quickly, and this book is on the whole quite confusing. I blame this partly on the fact that no degree-level physical textbook is much good, at least when it comes to explaining things in a language that one can understand. But nevertheless, this really should not be the case, and surely there is someone out there who can explain in simply language, why things happen the way that they do?. None of my lecturers rate this book much higher than I do, and all agree that it is the best of a bad bunch. Sadly they seem to be rather incapable of imparting their knowledge upon us, and are not a lot of use in this area. Summing-up:- Just accept that you are not going to understand this subject and don’t waste your money on this book. Better than nothing...... Barely!!
