This is an essential book for any undergraduate studying chemistry. Unfortunatly, as an undergraduate, you cannot escape the horrors of physical chemistry, so you may as well try to make life a bit easier for yourself! This book certainly does help. It's a book which not only explains the most difficult concepts of physical chemistry (which I find extremely difficult full stop), it also makes it interesting. Once you start to read relavent chapters, it reminds you that you're not doing the course just to learn what you have to learn to pass, rather that you want to know HOW things work, and WHY they work.

It's not a book I would sit down and read cover to cover. Instead I use it regularly to supplement lecture notes, or practical classes, or if there's a particular topic I'm not 100% sure about (quite a few in my case!)

The edition I have, 6th edition has a free cdrom which again complements the book nicely and is very useful indeed.

Everything is laid out in neat, understandable chapters.

Definitely a must for anyone who wants to pass physical chemistry!!

I am now a PhD student and I disagree a bit with this opinion. Atkins is the best Phys Chem book on the market but that's not saying much. I once threw this across my room in the first year it's poor explanations frustrated me so much.
