Tipler was something I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago, and now I get the feeling that by the time this year is over I'm going to get to know this book rather well indeed! Physics is the name of the book, and Physics is what it's got. About 1400 pages of Physics to be precise. And this books only for the first year! (Yes, I'm starting to worry I chose the wrong degree!). Anyway, the book is entitled "Physics for Scientists and Engineers', is written by Paul A. Tipler and is currently in the fourth edition. There was plans to releases a CD-ROM with one edition, so this may appear in the future, but at the moment there is ... Read the complete review

This book was endorsed in 2004 as the School of Physics and Astronomy principal textbook at the University of Southampton. Every first year student was given a copy to accompany the core modules of the Physics course and it was used extensively. As one of those first year students, I would like to offer the following comments on the book... Firstly, I can say that nearly every module in our first semester (including Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Waves and Thermodynamics/HEP) was covered well by this book. In my opinion, the book was most useful for it's extensive question and answer sections - found at the ends of each chapter. The answers provided were not ... Read the complete review

This is a golden compendium of in depth physics knowledge. It takes you from an all round understanding to a ground understanding of degree standard physics. It should stand as the foundation of any person who is studying Physics or even Engineering at university. Just to clarify on real_rob_writers review which was very much spot on? The Scope of the book is as follows. 1. Mechanics Motion in one dimension Motion in two or three dimensions Newton?s Laws Applications of Newton?s Laws Work and Energy Conservation Of Energy Systems of Particles and Conservation of Momentum Rotation Conservation of Angular Momentum ... I've been studying undergraduate physics at the University of leeds for the last three years and I have found this book to be worth its weight in gold. When you are starting off studying undergraduate physics you can feel a bit swamped learning all the new notations and theories. This book sets out, in very simple english, to protray this information in an interesting and clever way. The latest edition is full of easy to understand diagrams and photographs to help get the point across. The book is especially good at teaching you how to understand modern physics (such as einstens theories), electromagnetcs (which I'm sure that every undergraduate will ... Read the complete review
