Advantages: online download, cheap, a story we thought we'd never get to read
Disadvantages: very short chapters, not likely to be finished
The Plant is a multi/mini series released through Stephen King’s web presence www.stephenking.com. The Plant has now reached a point where, Mr. King has decided that he has more pressing work to complete and although a loose date has been set for him to start work on it again I sincerely doubt he will ever finish this story, at least not publicly anyway. There are six chapters available at present. I think in hindsight if I had known then that he would only publish the first six chapters that I would not have bothered to buy/download it. Don’t misunderstand me the story is classic King, witty, fast paced and chocked full of story, but I think he has broken a contract with his “constant reader” and he really should have finished it. Synopsis: John is an editor who works for a small time publishing house in New York (Zenith House); the publishers are about to get capped by their mother company. John and his fellow colleagues are going to be out of a job. Just at the point where they think there is no hope, what looks like a promising new writer submits a manuscript to Zenith house, the new writer’s name is Carlos. Promising is what John thinks at first, menacing is more apt once he reads the manuscript that has been submitted. Along with graphic details on ritual murder and satanic mass there are photo’s, very realistic looking photos. So as a concerned citizen John calls the police in, who promptly arrest Carlos. After several hours agonizing wait John hears that Carlos has been released, as it seems the gentleman in the ritual murder photograph is alive and well working alongside Carlos at the florist where he works. Several days later, john receives a menacing letter from Carlos, declaring that he will have revenge on John for his Judaism. John is very concerned, but is later placated by his boss who says that Carlos isn’t in NY so there’s no way he can harm him. He is plac
ated until a new letter arrives, supposedly from a fan of zenith house, informing John that a small plant will be delivered to him as a thank you for all the fine literature Zenith house has produced. The plant arrives and the janitor keeps it a secret as its only a small ivy plant that couldn’t hurt anyone, BUT the plant grows and grows and starts to whiled a type of genius/inspirational power over anyone who comes near to it. Can John use the plant to save both Zenith house and his own job… probably Will we ever find out… probably not L

- 13/04/01 I have read all of Stephen Kings books apart from The Plant. When Green Mile came out l waited until it was complete before l bought it and was going to do the same with this. Now that it has been taken off, l wished that l had bought the chapters that are out. |

- 06/03/01 I wonder if this will become his very own 'Mystery of Edwin Drood'? In other words, will someone trot along in two or three decades and finish it posthumously on his behalf? Somehow I can't see him wanting to leave it open to chance like that, so maybe you'll get your ending after all. |
