"The Playboy Guide to Jazz", by Neil Tesser, is very good for getting to grips with the history of jazz and a basic outline of how the music progressed. It requires you to either be willing to buy the CDs recommended by the book or to have a vague idea of what most of the main periods sound like (all I mean is be able to hear a bebop recording and say "that sounds a bit like Charlie Parker", same for stride, New Orleans, hard bop and cool jazz - just owning one CD of each is probably enough).
