Educating Rita - Willy Russell
by bruffyboy - written on 14/05/09 (Very useful, 53 readings)
Rating:
herself through Frank s Open University teaching. Set in the Thatcher era, Educating Rita is a touching, funny, and significant play that challenges pre-conceived ideas of class. Written by Willy Russell, the play is a success because of the journey both of the main characters go on. I don t want to give too much away, but I will say that both are able to learn something from each-other. As a teacher, we study this in my inner city school, a testament to the invalidity of the boundaries of class and social status, and the power of the human spirit. The play is written in a very working class Liverpool dialogue, which is easy to read and entertaining at the same time. ...

Rating:
deals greatly with the affects of growing intelligent. Where I found my most empathy with this book from was studying A-level English Literature. Biography - Willy Russell grew up just outside Liverpool where he attended school and failed. He was then destined to work at a ladies hairdresser. He went to college for a year to pretend to learn hairdressing but instead went to parties. At the end of it he had to go into hairdressing a job he couldn't even do right. Still before he managed to get a bad reputation at one hairdresser he moved on to another. Each time he longed for becoming a writer and wrote poems and songs during his breaks at the hairdresser's. ...

I bought this book about 3 weeks ago, but finally got round to reading it on the 24th Nov, and yesterday (26th Nov), I finished it. I don't really know why I chose to read it in the first place, I suppose it was because of an advert I saw in the paper... it had a picture of the book and the caption was: "The creator of 'Shirley Valentine' and 'Educating Rita' has just written his first book. Enough said." ...and from that moment, I was hooked! I had to have this book, I searched for it, and I didn't realise that it wasn't available for about a week! Then I found it (with £4 off the RRP too!)and I read the ...
