Advantages: Thrilling read and extremely cleverly written

Disadvantages: Perhaps not as good as its prequel...

The sequel to Anthony Horowitz's "Stormbreaker", "Point Blanc" continues with the story of teenage spy Alex Rider. In this book, he is sent to a boarding school in the mountains of France with a seemingly excellent record for 'curing' children who are constantly expelled for misbehaving. However, when two parents of children who have attended Point Blanc Academy crop up, Alex is the only recruit young enough to infiltrate the school and investigate.

One of the excellent features of this book is the two evil masterminds, Dr Grief and his German assistant, Mrs Stellenbosch. Grief is portrayed as a very cryptic character and his seemingly delicate approach to things sends a chill down the spine of the reader. Mrs Stellenbosch provides an excellent juxtaposition in that she is the brawn of the relationship, and the person that nobody wants to get on the wrong side of.

This book makes an excellent read if you have read "Stormbreaker" before it. If this book seems to make no sense to you, then you need to read the prequel. Similarly to this book's prequel, it makes a superb read and is difficult to put down once you get into the flow. There are moments of exceptional tension, and numerous intelligent twists that throw the plot off onto a completely different tangent, adding to the story's excitement.

It is mainly aimed at male teenagers, but I would advise anyone who likes the spy/thriller genre to give "Point Blanc" a try. It is one of many fantastic books written by Horowitz, and the cleverness of the plot makes the story one of his greats.

Summary: Excellent book with an extremely clever plot
