Newest Review: ... ridiculous politically correct world that we live in. They actually run my local authority which has seen huge rises in spending with zero improvements in service. The cost of running the council itself has doubled, as allowances and committee meetings have rocketed. They love a committee. The chance to vote on putting road humps and double yellow lines on an estate that doesn't want ... more

It is nearly local election time again. Despite people dying to give us the right, it is anticipated that as many as 75% of those eligible to vote will fail to do so. Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky (Pantheon Books, 1988) I remember when I was a kid that I thought the Vietnam war was very simple: one side, the Vietnamese, were in the right, the other, the Americans, in the wrong. As I grew up, my views became more "balanced" without my learning much more about the war: reading this book has completed my journey back to my original position. If one can argue that a good way to defend a people's democratic freedoms is to slaughter the people in question, the Americans were defending the democratic freedoms of the Vietnamese. They were also, and ...  Read the complete review
