Anderson definitely found a box of half finished ideas, notes and pages and this shows. This may be due to the fact that this is the first of the series of books and the first is frequently the harshest judged. I'm a big fan of Dune. However, having said that, House Atreides is definitely for either new comers to the Dune saga or die hard fans. It reads like fan fiction; it has a promising start but rapidly, ever so rapidly, begins to trough with the occasional peak. There's some inconsistencies throughout the book that are, in the grander scheme of things different from the original five novels. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. 'Dune' was originally written by Frank Herbert and told the tale of Paul Atreides, heir to the 'Great House' Atreides, as he find his destiny on the desert planet of Arrakis, home to the desert-dwellers called the Fremen, (who call the planet 'Dune'), giant sandworm's who the Fremen revere as manifestations of their God and the source of the spice known as 'melange', a substance of unknown origin, which prolongs life and in large enough quantities, allows the user to see into the future. 'House Atreides' is a prequel to 'Dune' and is the first part of the 'Prelude To Dune' series, co-written by Frank's son, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The book is set ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Prelude to Dune: House Atreides - Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson: Life Before Dune, That is the Question! (686 words)
by - written on 11/08/01 (Very useful, 64 readings)
Rating:

For all those science fiction fans that thought Frank Herbert?s books had finished with his death, think again! Prelude to Dune could be said to be a book from the grave. It is one book in three parts, House Atreides, House Harkonnen and (soon to be published in the UK in 2001 [I hope] House Corrino, originally to be The Spice War. Written by sci-fi writer Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Frank?s son). The story lines were taken from notes and preliminary writings of Frank Herbert, which he made prior to his death. The work provides answers to many questions about the politics of the ?Great Houses? in the Dune series, prior to the events in original book ...  Read the complete review

exciting, fast moving, has a memorable central character. linear central section, too like fantasy in places for this sf fan’s tastes.

Sci-Fi & Fantasy - Russell, Eric Frank

Sci-Fi & Fantasy - Reeves-Stevens, Judith

Straightforward space opera tale quirkily executed, interesting written format allows a large cast of characters to be defined purposefully, reasonably well-realised, if rather unconvincing, galactic civilisation. Lack of any real ideas at the heart of the bookover-reliance on violence to further the story (although, of course, this is a book about a war!)barely above average pulp science fiction.

brilliant artwork, suitable for all, fine detailed drawings not much of a storyvery little character developmentover-priced

Loveable, Memorable. None.
