Advantages: it adds some depth to the story arc

Disadvantages: it's badly written

I'm a big fan of Dune.

However, having said that, House Atreides is definitely for either new comers to the Dune saga or die hard fans.

It reads like fan fiction; it has a promising start but rapidly, ever so rapidly, begins to trough with the occasional peak.

There's some inconsistencies throughout the book that are, in the grander scheme of things different from the original five novels.

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson definitely found a box of half finished ideas, notes and pages and this shows.

This may be due to the fact that this is the first of the series of books and the first is frequently the harshest judged.

The writing is consistent yet issues are resolved in a sentence, major plot threads are started but left 'hanging' in the wind, character development is poor and is best described as being cartoonish.

I have a love/hate passion for this book and the following series. It's definitely very readable but the writing is nowhere near the mark

Summary: it fills out the saga but it's not worth buying for more than £3
