Obviously when the story moved to areas concerning zombies, or as they were so quaintly referred to, The Unmentionables, then we were into pastures new, however story seemed to flow quite seemlessly and without knowing the original, it was not obvious as to where the additions had been made merely by going on the style of writing alone. As a novel in it's own right the story was interesting, and quite an intriguing concept to set a zombie novel in a historic setting rather than the more traditional modern day approach. The ...more

Crowned Review Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - Jane Austen: 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' - or 'How to Make a Lot of ... (767 words)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a bit of a tragedy for me, because it had such great potential, and it utterly blew it. Any fan of zombie films could instantly, when presented with a merger of the classic Austen novel with a bit of undead horror, concoct dramatic scenarios far more entertaining than anything this book has to offer. I had envisaged a great siege at Netherfield or Pemberly, the Bennets and Darcys and Bingleys all forced to work together in a desperate bid for survival. How could they fend for themselves when the staff had all fled or been killed? The women would have to learn to shoot and fight, except Mrs Bennet of course, who would ...  Read the complete review

When I first saw the front cover of this book, I thought it was just an image manipulation someone had created for a laugh. However, after reading a few reviews, I discovered that someone had actually combined my two favourite subjects: zombies and Jane Austen! Seth Graeme-Smith does quite a good job of combining Austen's original text with new zombie-filled scenes. It's quite amusing to read familiar scenes that are punctuated with "unmentionables" (zombies) and the fact that Elizabeth Bennett is a super-cool fighter makes this book worth buying. It additionally has some very funny pictures to go along with the new text - I didn't think I'd ever see ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice and ZOMBIES! (262 words)

Rating:

I am a Jane Austen fan who also happens to be a fan of zombie books so when I saw that Pride and Prejudice had been re-wrote to include zombies I thought this book would be perfect. One thing I will say about this book is that if you haven't read or seen the film of pride and prejudice you might not get the humour of the book. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies keeps to the original storyline. The author has included the zombies so well that it seems they were always there. The language used when describing the zombies is the same traditional, formal and flowing style of writing that Austen used. Never before has the beheading of a zombie sounded so articulate. ...  Read the complete review

I have never read the original Pride and Prejudice novel. For that matter I have never read anything at all by Jane Austen. I had a vague recollection that the story contained a character called Mr Darcy, but who he was from Adam was anybody's guess. So I did approach this book without any sort of preconceptions as to what Seth Grahame-Smith would have done to the original text, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed what I read. Obviously when the story moved to areas concerning zombies, or as they were so quaintly referred to, The Unmentionables, then we were into pastures new, however story seemed to flow quite seemlessly and without knowing the ...  Read the complete review
