Advantages: Zombies and Jane Austen. What else do you need?

Disadvantages: Could have been researched a little better

When I first saw the front cover of this book, I thought it was just an image manipulation someone had created for a laugh. However, after reading a few reviews, I discovered that someone had actually combined my two favourite subjects: zombies and Jane Austen!

Seth Graeme-Smith does quite a good job of combining Austen's original text with new zombie-filled scenes. It's quite amusing to read familiar scenes that are punctuated with "unmentionables" (zombies) and the fact that Elizabeth Bennett is a super-cool fighter makes this book worth buying. It additionally has some very funny pictures to go along with the new text - I didn't think I'd ever see Ms Eliza Bennett karate-chopping a zombie to shreds!

I did have a few issues with some of the historical context, however. Yes, I realise that this is supposed to be a parody; however, I feel that Smith probably should have done a little more research into the Regency period before writing in his new scenes. A few of the scenes jarred a little; although the zombies were as authentic as zombies could be, the actions and words of the characters seemed a little out of place for the early nineteenth century. This is just me being pedantic - as long as you ignore the slight historical inaccuracies then you will enjoy this book immensely! I would encourage even those who aren't particularly fond of Jane Austen to read this; you never know, you may discover that you quite like her by the end of the novel.

I should warn you, however, not to read this before going to bed. I made that mistake and as a result had the most bizarre and epic zombie dream. It was really cool, but perhaps not something to dream about every single night!

Summary: A very fun read; a must-have for fans of Austen and zombies!
