It can be quite confusing when purchasing this book because there is another title by Jean Sasson called Princess Sultana’s Circle which is, as I understand it, the American version of Desert Royal (or it could be vice versa!). Mayada: Daughter of Iraq - Jean P. Sasson

I bought this book a few weeks ago whilst buying Desert Royal by Jean Sasson which, as most of you will probably know by now, is the third of a true-life trilogy for a Saudi Arabian princess. So, this is the 4th book I have read by Sasson and again it centres on the life of a Middle Eastern woman. Her name is Mayada and the book is about the true story of the granddaughter of two of Iraq’s most famous and respected leaders; Jafar Pasha Al-Askari (Defence Minister and Prime Minister of Iraq ) and Sati Al-Husri (one of the first Arab Nationalists and also a government minister). Although this is one of the best books that I have ever read I also found it very sad and at times shocking. It is a true, biographical, story of a Saudi Arabian Princess and, even with all her wealth she is still a prisoner of the Saudi Arabian way of life. I was aware that the women in Arabia have little say in the important aspects of lives but this really opened my eyes as to how much they are downtrodden by the male population of Saudi Arabia, even for a princess surrounded my so much wealth it is hard to comprehend. Her mother was married to her father in an arranged marriage when her father was 20 and her mother was 13. By the time her mother was 23 she had borne 11 ...
