I made a lot of Iranian friends whilst at college as it was the late 70's and it was fashionable for the elite in Iran to send their children to college in England to learn the language and a trade. I can remember some of my friends suddenly being recalled home at very short notice and some, not even being given the chance to pack or say goodbye, just get a plane ticket and come now!! I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it is outstanding! Written by Marina Nemat, this is a true account of a woman's horrific account of life as a prisoner in Tehran in Iran. Marina grew up in Tehran and a terbulent time when women were to be covered or beaten, books and music were banded and the country was ruled by extremists. Outspoken Marina was put in Tehran's notorious prison falsely accused of opposing the government when she was a young teenager. Here she was beaten and tortured and narrowly escaped death when a guard fell in love with her and falsed her to marry him and become his prisoner.
