Well worth trying if you've not already!

Promises in Death is the latest book in the 'In Death' series by bestselling author Nora Roberts writing under the pen name J D Robb.

The series features Detective Eve Dallas, a homicide detective for NYPD and her husband the dangerously attractive Roarke. The books are set in the future, with this book being set in 2060

The murder of a police officer is always going to cause the anger of every police officer, and Eve Dallas is no different. When the body of Detective Coltraine is founded dumped in the basement of her apartment block, Eve is first to arrive on the scene and takes over the case despite fierce oppisition from the officers in Coltraine's own team.

When Eve receives Coltraine's badge and gun, along with the threat that she will be next, she is determined to see the killer brought to justice. But, when Eve realises that Detective Coltraine was romantically involved with the son of a notorious criminal who Eve put behind bars for life, she is forced to question everything, Coltraine's honour included.

I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts, both as herself and as J D Robb, and this book fully lived up to my expectations. The 'In Death' series are not the kind of books where you can work out the murderer yourself, but rather you follow Eve as she discovers who the murderer is, I quite like this, but some people may not if they prefer to try and work out 'whodunnit' or look back and see the clues that were there earlier in the book.

The books are quite different from many murder stories, in that they also include a romantic element in the relationship between Eve and Roarke, it adds characterisation to the book and makes you feel more involved and gives a more enjoyable story.

The book is fast paced and well written, you are given insights into Eve's thoughts as she faces her own demons whilst finding justice for the dead.
