I actually bought this book having already read the second in the series (Mirror, Mirror), although at the time I didn't realise they had any connection! I still found this book a brilliant read and it wasn't spoilt by the fact that I knew what happened in the sequel!
It is a story of lies, deceit, family problems and how these can be turned around and still enjoy the good times to. Ellen Munroe is the main character that has fallen for a lying cheat that doesn't deserve the undivided love he receives from her. When she finds out she is pregnant will he do the honourable thing and marry her or turn his back on the whole situation? Sheila Munroe, Ellen's mother, cant believe her bad luck when she hears of the pregnancy and can only think about herself and how it is going to make her look. She doesn't want to be the laughing stock of the town and hates the fact that her rival in society will have one up on her now. How will the family cope with the circumstances and who will come out the other side a better person?
Good read and everyone would be able to relate to the characters and really get into the book. A very realistic storyline that you just won't want to stop reading.
The village of Glenree is home to the Munroe women: from the glamorous new in-law, Emma, to dogsbody Miriam and 'Airs-and-Graces' Sheila, who is forced to watch her own daughter Ellen become the talk of the county. The saying 'love is blind' could have been invented for the wayward Ellen, whose life changes for ever when she leaves the ebony darkness and winding country roads of Glenree for the bright lights of the city. It is there she falls in love with Chris Wallace, a skunk of the highest order. Promises, Promises covers a decade in the lives of the four Munroe women - and the charming womanizer who left a trail of emotional destruction in his wake. This is a tale of love and heartbreak, laughter and tears, that will strike a chord with all women...especially those who have loved a rotter!
