 ... enchantment. The story is fairly innocent theres no nasty surprise lurking. I would say it's similar to CS Lewis's Narnia chronicles in that both have an evil witch and both involve children travelling to other worlds. That's as far as the similarity goes. The book has an atmosphere very unlike Narnia and more like the sort conjured up by Alan Garner in his Weird Stone of Brisingham in that there's more of a menace felt surrounding the children a real deadly threat that you can almost taste. Fern a teenager has a gift (no nothing to do with playing the spoons). When her father moves in to an old village cottage of a deceased unlce she and her brother join him. Her dad doesn't intend to keep the house but sell it on. There are some strange things found like weird ugly statues and haunting paintings. Thus begins a magical adventure which leads Fern, with partial help from a mysterious tramp like figure, to the distant past to fight an evil Witch who threatens to change world history.
