This book was an interesting one for me - bought because it was recommended by a friend because I work in HR and she thought it might add to my job knowledge when dealing with depressive people absent from work (random i know!); i was a bit aprehensive of this book. I did have visions of it being very negative and aimed at the teenage market... ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A real insight into depression. (665 words)

Rating:

Prozac Nation is an autobiographical book by Elizabeth Wurtzel about her experiences of suffering from depression. Although I actually bought this book when I was studying depression in psychology, it also had more of a personal value in it, with people I know having killed/tried to kill themselves, and myself being a self harmer, ...  Read the complete review

Before I started writing this review I had a quick glance on what others though of the book, I noticed that there most certainly is a split in opinion. I have read Prozac Nation more times than I care to remember, and yet, I can see where all the people who couldn't stand the book were coming from. It most certainly is not everyones' cup of ...  Read the complete review

I was interested to read this book because a close friend of mine used to work for the pharmnacutical company which sold Prozac as a sales rep of the company this was the product she talked about most as at the time it was their biggest earner. Prozac Nation is Elizabeth Wurtzel own account of her experience of sufferring depression and ...  Read the complete review

Prozac nation was published in 1994, written by Elizabeth Wurtzel. The book is autobiographical, documenting Elizabeth Wurtzels experience with depression. Firstly, before I start talking about the novel itself, I want to say that this book meant more to me than any other book I have ever read in my life. In ...  Read the complete review

Prozac Nation is a true to life portrayal of Elizabeth’s life in the USA, written first hand. It starts off in her childhood, in the 70’s, when she is only around 8 or 9 from when she still feels normal to when she starts to feel the depression first kicking in. Her parents separate when she is pretty young and she gets sent away to Summer Camp ...  Read the complete review

Express Review on Prozac Nation - Elizabeth Wurtzel
by - written on 24/12/02
Rating:

dont bother reading. a waste of time. simply awful. - Advantages: some depressives might find something in here to relate to. - Disadvantages: poorly written. seems like something ripped out of a 12 year olds diary. , i have no sympathy for wurtzel. seems like that's all she intends to do: incite sympathy in others to boost her already swelling ego.

Crowned Review In amongst the tantrums are moments of clarity (1182 words)
by - written on 16/06/02 (Very useful, 341 readings)
Rating:

Ms Wurtzel is a stroppy, self-obsessed, hysterical and precocious author, who writes as though she’s penning Judy Blume-style teen McFiction with extra obscenities, and adult content on the side. This was her first book, written at 26, and describes her ongoing battle with depression. The narrative is reminiscent of a stamping, tantruming, ...  Read the complete review

Prozac Nation - Elizabeth Wurtzel: Prozac Nation- a novel, turned movie (407 words)
by - written on 16/06/02

Yesterday I finished reading a book called Prozac Nation written by Elizabeth Wurtzel. A very brief outlook on a depressed nation and how the American society is devouring the medications or wonder drugs at a rate that is alarming. Wurtzel's perspective is at times depressing, as one would think a depressed person may have, and is not for ...  Read the complete review

Well OK maybe all us depressives out here aren't self-centred super-brains but you get what I am saying. This book takes us on the journey through childhood, adolescence and into her twenties. Her being Elizabeth Wurtzel a young woman, one of the first people to take Prozac, a depressive, a writer, a clever young woman. I ...  Read the complete review

My friend lent this to me and warned me not to read it if I was in a bad mood or feeling unhappy. Even though I knew the book was about depression I didn't think there was anything to worry about but after just the first few pages I could see what she meant. I'm no stranger to the illness as two people very close to me have battled with ...  Read the complete review

"PROZAC MAKES THE HEAD GO ROUND" Is it true that Britain is a nation of druggie weirdos? I don't know but the word 'Prozac' seems to be known to one to many people in my eyes! Hearing stories about depression and 'Solace seeking' make me feel ill. Hey - we all get depression at some point and to be honest, i ...  Read the complete review

There’s something about depression, or manic-depressive illness, that immediately seems to make people think of good art or literature. There’s always been a stereotype that those who suffer from mental illness are also possessed of creative faculties beyond those of the fortunate unafflicted. Indeed, one of the leading experts on the ...  Read the complete review

I bought this book when a friend who knows i get depressed reccomended it to me saying that it would probably help me feel better. This is a work that is sorely in need of an editor's pen. Most of the book can be divided into two categories: 1) (a) Elizabeth's tortured whining about the pain of being dumped by "Rafe", her boyfriend, (b) her subsequent obsession with the event, and (c) her dysfunctional relationship with her mother, and 2) her ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Prozac Nation - Elizabeth Wurtzel: Give me Prozac, not Prozac Nation (425 words)
by - written on 05/07/00 (Useful, 868 readings)

If you’re not taking it before you read this book, you will be by the time you put it down. How did this ever get published? I really do not know. It is incredibly self-pitying. Wurtzel’s parents or friends clearly forgot their responsibilities with this child (which is what she is – so achingly immature) and, for some ...  Read the complete review
