Advantages: Realistic depiction of the various stages of death

Disadvantages: None!

It is amazing to think and realize that a twenty year old girl wrote this as her first novel. This book is just amazing, one of the greatest chick lit ever! It is funny and light, while centering about the despairing element of death. PS. I love you is mainly about the life of Holly who lost her husband to cancer, and how she copes with grief. In order to help her pain after his death, Gerry (the husband) left a series of letter for her to open every month. The book deals mainly about how attached Holly becomes to the letters, and how they help her on the road to recovery.

When I read the book, I noticed how Cecelia Ahern penned her words and sentences, along with her descriptions in such a way that the book flows like a movie. Indeed, when I watched the movie, I was quite astounded at the sense of déjà-vu. Ahern does have this particular talent for the gradual flow of the plot. Even in some of the best novels, I have noticed how the flow is occasionally broken or interrupted by some heavy attempt at sub-plots. But in this book, I can say that the sub-plots are not here only to provide a break from the main plot, in fact, it is the subplots which mainly contribute to the genuine humoristic aspect of the book. The subplots deal mainly with Holly's surroundings and environment, her friends and families and how they desperately try to help her come to terms with her grief and loss. Even the sub characters are very much alive and have a personality of their own.

In addition, the character and personality of Holly is very lovable and she represents someone whom many readers can find themselves into. I particularly loved the way in which Cecilia Ahern depicted Holly as sometimes sad, sometimes happy, sometimes eager to jump into bed with someone else...she really depicted the various stages of grief without going overboard on the tears and sobs.

Overall, I would say that this is a brilliant and very highly recommended book.

Thanks for reading!
