Advantages: Pretty front cover
Disadvantages: Characters I just couldn't care about
I was in the mood for a good romantic weepy and my friend recommended this.
Never have my eyes been dryer in my life. The only reason my eyes even briefly watered was due to the smoke wafting in my eye from my 12th cigarette to help me deal with the tedium.
In case you didn't know the plot of Ahern's P.S Holly and Gerry are soul mates. Meant to be. Two halves of a whole. Blah blah blah. Then he dies, far to young. This is the story of Holly learning to live without her other half, thanks to little notes he wrote to her before he died.
This could have been great. This could have really caused me to weep. However, it leaps far to quickly into the doom and gloom, we don't even get to really see Gerry and Holly together - don't get to see their relationship nor judge for ourselves just how happy and perfect they were together. Or at least we didn't get to read enough about it for me to care or feel upset for Holly when he died.
The rest of the book is just a bit contrieved and shallow, the notes are far to well timed to her situation at the time and she herself just isn't a likeable character.
I don't know, maybe I'm just dead inside but this didn't move me once. I read it in one evening and nothing.
I wouldn't recomend this to any of my friends, and I don't think much of Ahern's other novels that I've recently read.
In case you wondered, I'm still on the quest for a weepy so I've been given Angela's ashes on the promise it will emotionally drain me. I hope it's that good!
