Advantages: Well written, engaging storyline

Disadvantages: Slightly disappointing ending, but good none the less.

I watched the film P.S. I Love You the other week and loved it so much that I immediately went onto Ebay and bought the book (at a bargain price of £3.26, RRP £6.99). Apparently the book is an "International Bestseller", and it's not hard to see why. If you enjoy a good romantic bit of escapism, this is the book to read. I won't go into too much detail about the plot as firstly you can read the blurb etc for yourself (try www.amazon.co.uk) , and secondly if I told you the plot then you wouldn't read the book and I really think you ought to!

~ Plot ~

The plot of the story is very moving and had me in tears the whole way through.
The story begins with the scene of a young woman, Holly, who is grieving for her husband, Gerry. Her mother tells her she still has an envelope for her with the words 'The List' on the front. Inside the envelope is a set of envelopes each with a different month written on the front. The letters are from Gerry giving Holly tips and 'tasks' to do each month, each letter ending with the words 'P.S. I love you'.
The book moves through each month until the final letter in December.
The book is very moving, but there are also humorous parts of the book. It's a real chick lit with everything in there from romance, sadness, and laughter. The book, as well as taking you through the passion and love between Gerry and Holly, also shows the feelings that perhaps are involved with losing a loved one, such as the jealousy towards friends that they are happy etc.

~ So, did you like it? ~

Loved it! It's not the next War and Peace by any means, but as far as chick lits go this one has it all. I cried whilst reading most of the book (accompanied by lots of eye rolling from my boyfriend! Though I did cry profusely whilst making him promise not to die!) but there were also some 'laugh-out-loud' moments in there too.

I thought the book was well written and believable (which always helps!) and am definitely going to read it again. It's an easy to read novel (nothing too taxing literary wise) though hard to put down. The book's ending is not as satisfying as I would have hoped, but this does not detract from how good the rest of the novel is.

Another bonus, which may be a down side for others, is that the book is fairly sizeable (for a trashy romance novel any way). I tend to get through books in a few hours, so to have a book which lasted two sittings was definitely a good thing.

~ Basics ~

Title: P.S. I Love You

Author: Cecelia Ahern

Pages: 520 (including an extract from Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern at the end)

ISBN 10: 0007165005
ISBN 13: 9780007165001

Price: I bought my copy for £3.26 on Ebay, though the prices are dropping slightly on there since lots of people are selling their book as Amazon is out of stock and so all the books are selling. (That was a long winded way of saying: you could probably get it for under £3!)

~ With regards to the film ~

I read this book post film watching, so I thought I would give a little comparison between the two. The film was good, the book was good, but if I was Cecelia Ahern I would be most annoyed that the film makers took the book and re wrote it containing the slightest whiff of the original story! So, if you've seen the film and thought "hmmm... well I've seen the film, no need to read the book", think again. The story line, whilst containing a woman (still named Holly) who grieves for her dead husband and reads letters he sent to her, is completely different.

~ Overall Opinion ~

If you enjoy romance novels that are easy to read and engaging, then read this one. I am definitely recommending this one to my friends (and you, reader of my review!).

Summary: A good romantic novel bound to have you in tears
