Advantages: Very comprehensive introduction to all the key aspects of Psychology

Disadvantages: does not go into any great depth, but this was not the intention.

Richard Gross' book has been a bible to students for over 20 years. Beginning as a much thinner but, nontheless, still informative "A" level text, this volume has been through numerous revisons, editions and updates over the years. This is now considered THE general introductory textbook at an undergraduate level and this latest edition does not disappoint.

The book contains overviews of the latest research in all areas of psychology, with the sections on cognitive and social psychology being particulary rounded.

One criticism that I do still hear relating to the volume is that it does not go into any real depth on any particular topic. While this is true, it is also plain that the book is not designed to be an in-depth examination of any particular aspect of the discipline of Psychology, instead aiming to introduce all the main facets of this wide field at an introductory level. From here the student may investigate further, employing the admirable set of references given and explore the pertinent texts cogent to the areas they wish to investigate.

When all is considered, I could not recommend a better user friendly text for the beginner in Psychology. For this Gross' book deserves high praise indeed, continually being the most comprehensive textbook of the starter level a student can buy.

Summary: If a beginner in Psychology, buy it!
