Advantages: Good layout, great content

Disadvantages: none

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn psychology or are just interested in the subject. It really does do a great job as an introductory book. It covers all the major topics in enough detail so you know what's going on. I bought mine when i started uni and i has been a really helpful reference point.

The layout of the book is really user friendly and easy to follow and read. There are lots of illustrations and diagrams to help explain the content and it just breaks down the chunks of text making it more interesting to read. All the different chapters are broken down into sub categories and they are colour co-ordinated. Apart from the main paragraphs of text there are different boxes for different information. The boxes explain certain things in more detail and usually gie a list of studies which are related to the topic. There are also boxes with 'ask yourself' questions designed to make you think about the issues and points within the topic. Each new chapter has an index to break down the content of the chapter. It then goes into a general introduction, giving a brief over view before it does into more detail.

It's very well written and there are lots of studies and theories which are explained to you in a clear and interesting manner. It's very easy to read and they write the technical terms in italics so you know which words are content related. It covers all the main ideas in psychology including: the biological basis of behaviour, cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psych, individual differences and issues and debates. These are just the broader areas of psychology. The books tries to cover as many topics in each area as possible. It does not cover everything but as a introductory book it is enough.

After reading it you will know a lot more about psychology and will definately be able to discuss with others about it and formulate your own opinions, which means the book has served it's purpose. It isn't biased in anyway it merely states the facts. It allows you to discover which areas interest you more so you can read about it in more detail. This definately great for those studying psychology both for A-level and degree level. Although other books will be needed to further your knowledge.

It also has an extensive list of references which makes it easy to learn more and read the original articles if desired. I highly recommend it; it's a great read really easy to follow and understand.

Summary: Perfect book for those starting psychology
