Advantages: Touch and feel elements encourage sensory awareness
Disadvantages: None
It was during a visit to WH Smith that my little boy spotted Priddy Books' Quack! Quack! sitting on the shelf. With its cover depicting a young chick with a touch and feel furry belly he was immediately drawn to it. I reached it down for him to take a look and could not have put it back if I had wanted to!
Quack! Quack! By Louise Rupnik is a fantastic offering from Priddy Books Touch and Feel Series. This particular series of books is perhaps a little similar to Usborne's That's Not My... range which also have touch and feel elements throughout.
The concept of the book is rather simple, we are shown six different baby animals and asked to explore their touch and feel textured areas. For example on one page we are shown a curious piglet and asked if we can touch our nose with his nose.
Situated somewhere around each animal is the sound that the animal makes, for example 'Oink! Oink!' These words also have a touch and feel element as they are slightly raised and have a velvety texture, as do the title on the cover and on the spine of the book.
The book is quite tall and relatively large, however it is not oversized and is easy for a young child to grasp. The thick pages of this board book also make it very suitable for younger children.
From an educational element this book does well to encourage sensory awareness in younger babies with its textured areas. For slightly older children perhaps it also teaches the sounds that animals make. Overall it is plenty of fun, it will draw in young children and is simply a joy to read.
My son is almost one and a half and very much enjoys books. He also has a love of "quack quack's" and so this book was an ideal buy for him. He has been drawn to this book time and time again and never fails to lose interest in the touch and feel elements. In particular he loves to feel the chick's fluffy feathers on his cheek and will rub noses with the piglet just as the book asks. As we read through the book he will attempt to make the noises of some of the animals.
Quack! Quack! by Louise Rupnik is as aforementioned available at WH Smith. Since my purchase it has now been reduced by 20% and is priced at just £3.99. This is an excellent price for such a stimulating and interactive book and I intend to seek out a few more for my son's collection.
