Songbird - Josephine Cox

Premium Review a fantastic read (568 words)

Rating:

along the way. It is a friendship that is tested to the limits when Maddy takes a heartbreaking decision. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, being the first Josephine Cox novel I have read. I found it hard to put it down and read it over a pretty short space of time. There were times when I too felt very sad about the girls situation and the tough decisions they are both faced with, but particularly Maddy. There were also times when I laughed aloud. There are a fair few twists and turns, some of which are glaringly obvious - one for me was totally unexpected, but was obvious , I was just a bit blind to it! It certainly made me think about my relationships with my ...

Girl on the Platform - Josephine Cox

Premium Review Pointless on the Platform...or anywhere else for that matter (486 words)
by slinkyindieninja - written on 16/12/08 (Very useful, 62 readings)
Rating:

The story focuses on best mates Mark and Pete who go to London for a night out. At the station they begin their journey at, Pete sees a sad-looking girl on the opposite platform, and quickly becomes obsessed with the idea of finding out who she is and helping her. On the way to London the men realise that they won't have enough time to visit any nightclubs after the theatre show they have tickets for if they have to catch the last train home, so they find a hostel, run by Leila, the stereotypical "feisty" landlady. The London section is well paced and funny, and gives enough background info about Mark and Pete to make them sympathetic, but once they go back home the book ...

Cradle of Thorns - Josephine Cox

Premium Review I CAN'T EVEN SELL IT ON EBAY (692 words)
by thingywhatsit - written on 13/07/06 (Very useful, 144 readings)
Rating:

"Driven and Passionate, she stirs a pot spiced with incest, wife-beating .... and murder" The Sunday Times. When I read this book which is the second I have read from this author, I suppose that I thought she may have improved upon her writing and that perhaps she developed her discriptive abilities. There do seem to be an awful lot of books written by this lady, and perhaps I had judged her harshly on the first read. The story revolves around a young lass called Nell, in the 1890's, who is maid that becomes pregnant and leaves home in order to find her future, away from the shame that she is accused of causing to her Aunt, and encouraged to do so ...
