Advantages: the moral
Disadvantages: none
Here's the latest book my wife has brought back for our two year old from the library, and what a nice book it is.
It tells the tale of a special fish who has shiny scales. When another fish asks for one, he refuses, only to lose all of his friends. Eventually, a wise octopus tells him he should share his scales to bless others, and he does so.
The book contains full colour illustrations, all of which are watercolour paintings. They are nicely done, in more of a sketchy style than detailed work, and only the shiny scales are made up of a metallic paper.
The amount of writing in the book is pretty extensive, and it will take a good ten minutes to read it to your little one, if not more. The difficulty of the text (using words such as 'dazzling') mean this isn't the most simple of books, and it may alienate those with a limited vocabulary.
I really like the moral of the story, a very biblical 'you must give to receive'. It's a nice moral that is simple and understandable, and prompted a good conversation with my boy about sharing with his new brother.
All in all, this is a nice book, and one that seems to be part of a series I shall look into further. I can see from the word-count that this review is very short, but there's nothing more to say!
Summary: do it
