Advantages: Page-turners
Disadvantages: The main character is a bit depressing
...and that is an example of a Rebus. Not particularly relevant, but once I'd thought of it, I had to write it down. Ian Rankin is best known for the Inspector Rebus books, a set of detective novels, featuring the aforementioned Rebus, a social misfit from Scotland, working in Edinburgh. He as also written three books under the name Jack Harvey, these are thrillers, more in the vein of The Day Of The Jackal. The Rebus books are excellent detective fiction, cracking good reads, with an endless need to turn the next page. The stories are always enthralling, though the rather socially inept lead character may put off the casual reader. Estranged from his wife, a tense relationship with his daughter, a very tenuous connection with girlfriends and a major drink problem, Rebus is not the most prepossessing of heroes, but he is a very good detective, and that is where these stories should be judged. Nothing too deep, just a very good read, Ian Rankin comes highly recommended.

- 21/06/01 The Rebus series is excellent and I really enjoyed all the books, I agree with Tim, that a bit more detail would have helped. |

- 21/06/01 Bit brief, & would've helped if you'd named & introduced some of the books. |
