Advantages: Brilliant and extremely funny
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little odd
This man is a comedy genius. There, that's all there is to it really. Alright then, I see you're doubtful, so I will continue. Author of books such as The Armageddon: The musical Trilogy and the Brentford trilogy (in five parts), Rankin seems to be writing whatever ceoms into his head. That's not a bad thing. As you read on, all of the random plot threads and incidental characters begin to weave into incredibly well-crafted climaxes (just look at The Brentford Triangle for the best example). His style is quite laid-back, with an almost dreamlike quality to the writing that gives everything a slight hint of surreality. It's also frighteningly funny, with running gags, old jokes, and urban legends all playing their part to make his books great. You often find yourself laughing at a very bad joke purely because you can't believe that Rankin has used it. If you want to check him out, get the Antipope, which is the first Brentford novel, then carry on from there! You'll be hooked!

- 23/08/00 I have to agree. Robert Rankin is brillant. I came across his books by accident, and have been
hooked ever since. I used to live in Brentford, so the books have that little bit
extra for me, but I think I would have enjoyed them where I ever I had lived! |
